Historic Grade II-listed pub applies for permission for letting rooms
The Masons Arms – formerly the Clanfield Tavern – on Bampton Road, Clanfield, reopened under its original name in October after being bought by hospitality group Country Creatures which owns The Double Red Duke over the road.
The plan would see the upper floors converted into letting bedrooms each with an ensuite bathroom and a fire exit staircase added to the rear of the building.
It will provide “modern guest accommodation in a building of historical significance”, says the applicant.

Proposed works include refurbishment of original windows, renewing floor finishes, new wall and ceiling finishes following asbestos strip out and minor external repairs to the roof and stonework including roof insulation.
A heritage statement supporting the listed building consent application to West Oxfordshire District Council says the works “are sympathetic to the building’s historical and architectural significance”.
“It will provide a high quality pub which will benefit the building, and surrounding areas generally.”
“While the works will have some impact on historic fabric, it is considered that this is of an acceptable degree and that a balance has been achieved between impact and the benefits of securing an appropriate long-term and sustainable use for the listed building,” it says.
Oxfordshire County Council, which is responsible for highways, does not object.
