Apple has added a new child safety warning label to its AirTag trackers in compliance with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

In a press release, the CPSC noted that the AirTag ” met the performance requirements for securing the AirTag’s lithium coin cell battery” but “did not have the required on-product and on-box warnings concerning the severe risk of injury from battery ingestion if these small batteries are not kept out of reach of children.” Specifically, the CPSC is singling out AirTags imported to the U.S. after March 19th, when the law known as “Reese’s Law” went into effect.

Now, Apple has agreed to add warnings to both AirTag trackers themselves and their packaging. In particular, the CPSC says the battery compartment of the AirTag will now feature a “warning symbol,” while the AirTag boxes will “include required warning statements and symbols.”  The accompanying Find My app also now provides “a warning about the hazards of button and coin cell batteries” when you’re prompted to change an AirTag battery.

It’s worth noting that Apple is rumoured to be introducing a second-gen AirTag this year, well after the debut of the first iteration of the device in 2021. In the meantime, travellers with Air Canada, United and Delta airlines now support Find My tracking via AirTags.
